Simple Bathroom Makeovers
Small changes that make a big difference
If you don’t have the time or money for a complete overhaul of your existing bathroom but you want a definite change, a quick makeover may be your answer. There are a few bathroom areas that cause homeowners the most consternation, and by concentrating on one or two of these areas, you can make a world of difference in your bathroom.
Color Changes
Painting the walls, ceiling, doors and trim is absolutely the cheapest way to give any room a fresh look and feel. Color possibilities are endless now that paint stores can color-match any material you bring to them. You can even recreate the feel of your Mexican honeymoon when you bring in the rebozo you bought at the village market and the paint mixer matches the shade.
You can also use fabrics, in the form window treatments and shower curtains, to add splashes of color to contrast your new paint. Or, your paint color can be inspired by the shower curtain you found first. Add more complementary colors in bath mats and sink accessories, and your color change is complete.
Fixture Resurfacing
You may dream of replacing the fixtures in the bathroom, but the reality is that it’s an expensive and time-consuming project. From matching the drain basins to the new models to removing doors in order to get the huge old fixtures out and the new ones in, replacing fixtures is a massive commitment. If you have less time and less money (or maybe less patience) than it takes, you may consider resurfacing old fixtures instead. Besides, you’ll be saving the landfill sites an extra load.
Flooring Fix-ups
The bathroom floor sees more abuse than any other floor in the house. Yes, even more than the kitchen! Think about what drops on the bathroom floor, and how many times your teenage daughter has colored her hair in there. The chemicals that are used in the bathroom can wreak havoc on floor finishes. But a high-quality fix for your floor may take less money than you think. You may have to replace that vinyl floor or carpet, but often hardwood and tile can be resurfaced to find a whole new life in your new bathroom.
